Hey everyone, how’s it goin’?
I spent a lot of Christmas seasons on the Hopi reservation in Arizona. I remember what it was like seeing Christmas lights on the Hopi rez – it was a rare sight, but a beautiful one. You could see one lit up house miles away – a cool sight in the middle of the desert.
If you live in an area where few know Jesus, you know how “dark” of a season Christmas can be – probably why there aren’t many lights up celebrating the season. But here’s a thought…why don’t you be the Christmas light on your rez or Native-populated area?
The more darkness there is around you, the more the light cuts through. That’s why it’s especially important to do things that “light up” your community during the Christmas season.
This should be one of your busiest times of year! With the songs, decorations, etc., people are usually a little more open to the idea of Jesus at Christmas. That means more natural open doors to the Gospel – use those doors!
Do the unexpected. Bring gifts, cookies, go caroling, even to people you think won’t care. We went caroling all the time on the Hopi rez and people loved it. The kids that did the caroling loved it. People are desperate for any light, joy, and hope you can offer them! You’ll be surprised how far a couple of carols, a plate of cookies and a tract about Jesus or your ministry will go.
By the way, try hitting up your local Wal-Mart (or other places) for gifts – lots of times they will help, especially at a time of year where they have lots of inventory they’d like to write-off by giving it to a charity or organization. Your best bet is to write up your request on a page with your organization or ministry’s letterhead on the top and give it directly to someone like a manager that can make these kinds of decisions.
Hey, be sure to check out the brand new Christmas podcast too, and get on the forums! We need each other!!!
